June/July 2024

Summer has offically arrived in full bloom, which has got me ruminating on my favourite topic – wedding flowers. I must confess, I adore fresh flowers, none more so than our British spring and summer varieties, so I do hope you’ll indulge me for a short while as I wax lyrical!

The perfect wedding blooms effortlessly fill an empty venue with romance, fragrance and colour, creating the ultimate ambience; and with the right florist on your side, they can speak volumes about the two of you and the vision for your big day. What’s more, they’re efficient. Pedestals, aisle meadow arrangements, ceremony arches and much more can all be moved into your reception space after the “I dos” and seamlessly transform into centrepieces and top table backdrop. You get the most from your budget, your theme carries through and you keep waste to a minimum.

Your wedding day is all about the two of you, so why not have a think about how you can tailor your flowers to further tell your love story? The language of flowers combines tradition with sentimentality and conveys a meaning that perhaps only the two of you will understand, but as you’re the two most important that’s all that matters. For example, gypsophila is a wedding staple but perhaps its meaning, everlasting love, has been lost over the years. Some of my other favourites include: cornflowers symbolising prosperity and friendship; hydrangeas meaning gratitude and understanding; peonies speaking of romance, prosperity, good luck and a happy life; and roses, in particular pink, which symbolise admiration. So, you see, you can write an entire love letter to your new spouse through your bouquet – how romantic.

I do hope some of this has whet your appetite for more wedspiration; if so, don’t miss our venue styling feature where florals never fail to impress. We’ve also been in touch with the region’s bridal boutiques to take a look into how to dress according to your vibe. Plus, this issue’s Hot Topic experts are discussing intimate weddings.

So, as ever, enjoy and keeeep planning!

Hestercombe Gardens

The historical buildings at Hestercombe have plenty of wow factor and offer unrivalled views across the glorious Edwardian gardens and beyond to the imposing Blackdown Hills. The venue features no less than 50 acres of lovingly restored gardens, representing three centuries of work and featuring lakes, cascades, temples, rills, shade-dappled pathways, and romantic corners. The beautiful scenery is tended by a team of skilled gardeners all year round providing a very special setting indeed for any big day.

Ceremonies can be held in The Orangery for up to 90 loved ones. A beautiful light-filled setting, this iconic ham-stone building was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, and offers the ideal backdrop whatever your theme.

Guests can spill out onto the Orangery Lawn and enjoy a drinks reception post vows.

The Bampfylde Hall meanwhile, dates back to 1680 and with its high ceilings and dramatic timber beams it provides a memorable space for your vows. There’s space here for “I dos” witnessed by 150 nearest and dearest.

Alternatively, if you’d prefer to exchange vows al fresco, truly making the most of the gorgeous gardens, the Temple Arbour, dating from the 1750s and perched high above the Pear Pond, can seat up to 112.

The Bampfylde Hall is also home to receptions at Hestercombe and can seat 112 guests for the wedding breakfast and can accommodate 150 for the evening do. With a lovely fairylight canopy it offers a charming and romantic atmosphere as you dine and dance the night away.

Hestercombe House too can host intimate ceremonies and receptions in its period rooms, perfect for smaller wedding parties.

All of the venue’s newlyweds are given a full membership for a year and are invited back for a celebratory afternoon tea on their anniversary.

Celebrate Bridgerton's return with The Francis Hotel's Regency Experience

Hurrah! Part two of our beloved Bridgerton has finally hit our screens! Bridgerton, a beloved cult classic, captured hearts upon its release and has now become Netflix's most-watched series, with a staggering 41% of subscribers tuning in to its last series. Fans of the hit period drama filmed in the fair city of Bath can truly immerse themselves in the Regency era during a stay at The Francis Hotel. The city of Bath is home to many iconic spots from the show, including Modiste's dress shop, Lady Danbury's townhouse, and Gunter's tea shop. From the cobbled and picturesque Abbey Green, which stood in for a market square in the series, to The Holburne Museum, which acted as the entry for the opulent ball scenes, guests will be able to recognise many of the famous sites that take place on Bridgerton. Fans may even take a visit to the home of the Featheringtons, No.1 The Crescent which in real life is a museum dedicated to the period.
